Launch of The Master Cutler’s Challenge 2024

January 22, 2024

This year the Master Cutler’s Challenge (MCC) is being run to benefit the Sheffield Cathedral’s Schools Singing Programme (SCSSP).  The educational, social and health benefits of children’s choral singing are well documented.  In particular, in areas of economic challenges, both parents and teachers have been delighted by participants’ improved confidence, engagement and educational attainment in literacy, numeracy and teamwork.   SCSSP is a life-changing programme reaching out to schools across the region to deliver high quality musical education into state schools without music normally on the curriculum.  The 2024 MCC will help accelerate this process and broaden the reach of the programme to benefit more young people and communities.

At its heart, MCC remains an entrepreneurial challenge.  Over the past 15 years, participating companies and organisations have nominated internal Champions to run their response to the MCC.  These Champions have found many and varied ways to grow the seed corn funding into meaningful sums, whilst enjoying doing events and activities with their colleagues.   It is hoped that this year will provide similar entertainment, as well as provide key funding for the work being done by Sheffield Cathedral’s music team in delivering their singing programme into local state schools.

As in previous years, the MCC will provide seed corn funding of £50 for each participating company, organisation or individual.  The idea is that participants then use their business skills to grow these funds for the benefit of the SCSSP.  These funds will help change lives, raise aspirations and also build a choral legacy in the region.

The 2024 challenge will be soft-launched during the Master Cutler’s visit to the SCSSP programme at Porter Croft Primary School on 23rd January 2024.  With the assistance of the pupils and the Sheffield Cathedral’s Director of Music, Tom Daggett, he will count down as the dedicated MCC website goes live.  This online portal will then allow companies and organisations to sign up to take part in the challenge and receive their £50 cheque or donate cash.  The Challenge will run through to July so activities can be done and fundraising completed in time for an Awards event in August.

Any Company wishing to take part in the MCC can register their interest now at
